The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) for the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System (VATVCBHCS) is primarily responsible for providing administrative support to the professional staff in health care delivery in a diversified ambulatory care setting, utilizing working knowledge of all medical center programs and services. The incumbent provides orientation to the professional staff on administrative procedures and logistical factors associated with health care delivery. Incumbent is the focal point for both veterans and clinical staff, providing assistance and acting upon administrative matters in the veterans' interest to include duties related to the receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information. The MSA is able to independently manage position responsibilities with little supervision, as well as set priorities and deadlines adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs. The Medical Support Assistant performs receptionist duties, customer service and other duties assigned for the proper and timely treatment of patients and maintains appointment schedules for one or more outpatient clinics. He/she must assist with clinic access contingency plans by adjusting appointment times, location, or dates as well as shift patients to other healthcare providers as conflict with staffing and/or coverage occurs. The MSA must screen/receive phone calls in a courteous and timely manner, determine the nature of requests and provide the information desired using privacy rules and establish clinic processes. The MSA is responsible for scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Alternate tours may be required to meet patient needs.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Candidates must demonstrate the KSA's below: 1. Ability to meet, communicate and interact with individuals from varying backgrounds and other health care team members in a courteous and helpful manner in order to complete job assignments. 2. Ability to use various types of office automation equipment and software. 3. Ability to set up, organize, and maintain record systems.
GS-5 Medical Support Assistant (Full Performance Level)
- Experience or Education**: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or 4 years of education above high school.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below: 1. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports. 2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. 3. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting. 4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work. 5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 6. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-5..
Physical Requirements:The Medical Support Assistant position will require light lifting, and carrying (under 15 pounds), use of fingers, walking and standing (1 hour through out the day), repeated bending (1 hour), climbing (1 hour), working alone and working closely with others, and in shared work space, working outside and working inside.
