The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is comprised of two inpatient campuses: the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio and the Kerrville VA Hospital in Kerrville, Texas. The STVHCS serves one of the largest primary service areas in the nation, with 63 counties, and is part of the VA Heart of Texas Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 17), with offices located in Arlington, Texas. Providing a service to Veterans with a working staff of more than 3,100 employees, South Texas provides health care services for 93,000 Veterans. The STVHCS is a facility providing primary, secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. It also supports a 90 bed Extended Care Therapy Center, a 30-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, an eight-bed Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and a Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center. Affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the system has an active ambulatory care program with numerous satellite outpatient clinics.

The Nursing Assistants for the (Medical Intensive Care Unit) will provide quality nursing care to a variety of patients ranging from age 18 - 100+ years. Your work assignments will be based on the need of the Unit at the time and will be expected to float throughout the Hospital. You will obtain and record vital data such as height, weight, and any additional data required by the provider, and you will record vital signs and will transport specimens for laboratory testing. You will provide complete, or assist with, personal hygiene care, including bowel and bladder needs. You will turn and position patients to maintain proper body alignment, and will lift, transfer and ambulate patients using good body mechanics and assistive/safety equipment. When required, you will perform 1:1 observation and report changes in the patient's condition to the nurse, and will document observations and care. You will provide information based on patient's condition, acceptance of limited physical mobility, body mechanics, colostomy care and irrigations, and will provide the patient and family after care instructions and assist therapeutic groups. If required, you will initiate and/or assist with emergency measures, including maintaining airway, CPR, and protecting patients having seizures. You will work as a Nursing Assistant in the Medical Intensive Care Unit where your primary purpose will be to serve in a capacity as a member of the nursing team, performing a variety of nursing assignments of a general nature; administering care to patients and support to providers and nurses in the performance of personal care; assisting with diagnostic examinations; observing patients for change in condition; and treatment of the patient, family/significant other/co-workers and peers with respect and courtesy at all times. You will assist doctors and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations by performing duties such as monitoring vital signs, preparing and positioning the patient, or by performing a variety of routine diagnostic tests. You will care for the patient's non-routine care and conform needs for psycho/social/spiritual wellbeing, personal hygiene, physical comfort, nutrition, elimination, prevention of skin breakdown, rehabilitation, and safety. You will be responsible for teaching patients and family members the necessity to continue the procedures for proper health care, and encouraging patients in self-care activities within their individual capacities as outlined on their care plan.You will be required to perform other related nursing duties as assigned.

Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the CNA occupation. Experience. One year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;
Education. Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care, or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.
Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in a simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.
GS-5 (Full Performance Level)
Experience.One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below;
Education.Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree;
Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a RN and/or LVN.
Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new NAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
